Keep Summer Skin Healthy and Hydrated

Summer is on the horizon, and for most people, that means it’s time to swap out the winter jacket for a bathing suit and beach towel and enjoy some outdoor activities. Whether you’re planning a trip to the lake or a backyard barbecue, you’ll want to ensure your skin stays hydrated and protected against the rising temperatures. As the body’s largest organ, your skin is exposed to numerous elements that can cause dehydration, resulting in fine lines and wrinkles, dry-patchy skin, or acne breakouts.

To give your skin a healthy, natural glow this summer, here are a few tips to rehydrate your skin care routine.

Clean Your Pores:

Every day, your face comes into contact with dirt and oils that clog pores and irritate skin. So, it’s important that you cleanse your face twice a day (morning and night) using a mild cleanser to remove makeup, sunscreen, and residue from outdoor elements. Remember to avoid washing your face too often, however, as this can remove your skin’s natural oils and speed up the drying process.

Moisturize Daily:

High temperatures combined with humidity and UV radiation are harmful to your skin’s health. To combat the warm weather, you’ll need to moisturize your skin at least twice a day. If you have sensitive skin or a combination of dry and oily skin, it’s a good idea to consult a dermatology specialist to find the best skin care products that complement your unique skin type.

Drink Plenty of Water:

Drinking clean water seems like an obvious solution to hydrate skin, but during the summer months, a cold brew or cocktail may seem more appetizing than a refreshing glass of water. Alcohol is a known diuretic, and depending on the beverage, it may contain high levels of sugar that lead to acne breakouts. Remember to moderate your alcohol consumption and drink a glass of water in-between each drink to rehydrate your body.

Protect Your Skin from UV rays:

No matter your skin type, sunscreen is essential in hydrating skin and protecting it against harmful UV rays. When choosing a sunscreen, look for ones with broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection and those with a SPF of 30 or higher. If your makeup foundation has a built-in SPF, you still need sunscreen to protect your face, as foundation products do not provide enough coverage to protect your skin from increasing UV radiation. For added protection, you may want to accessorize your beach gear with a stylish hat or shawl to cover your skin.
