With age, pregnancy, breast-feeding and weight loss, the breasts naturally become more deflated and ptotic (droopy). A breast lift procedure, or mastopexy, helps to re-suspend the breast tissue and nipple to a more youthful position and shape. Sometimes the areola becomes enlarged over time, and a breast lift will reduce this as well.
About the procedure
A breast lift is performed in the operating room with the patient asleep. The incisions used vary based on the patient’s breast measurements, size and degree of ptosis (droopiness). Typically, a vertical “lollipop” incision is made around the areola and then down towards the breast fold. However, occasionally this incision needs to be extended within the breast fold creating an “anchor” or “Inverted-T” incision. Through this incision, the breast is reshaped and the nipple is lifted to a more youthful position.
A breast lift does not typically change the size of your breasts, but instead redistributes the volume to create a more shapely and full look. However, in patients interested in enhancing their breast size and upper pole fullness, an augmentation with an implant can be performed during the same surgery. Conversely, in patients interested in reducing their breast size, some breast tissue can be removed during the breast lift procedure.
Recovery
After breast lift, patients return home the same day. Waterproof dressings will be applied to your incisions so that you can shower the next day after surgery. Aside from strenuous activity or heavy lifting, patients typically resume their normal activities shortly after surgery. Some medications to control your pain will be given for the first week after surgery. You will be placed in a soft, supportive surgical bra for up to 6 weeks after surgery. Some swelling and bruising can occur but typically resolves within a couple weeks. Scar prevention therapy is usually began 2 weeks after surgery once your incision is completely closed
