One of the first areas to show signs of aging is the neck. With time, gravity and sun damage leads to laxity of the skin and tissues of our neck. This can result in saggy skin, bulging fat and visible vertical bands of muscle (i.e. platysmal bands). All of these can contribute to a less distinct jawline, an appearance of a “double-chin,” jowls and a more obtuse neck contour. Given the visibility of the neck, many people seek improvement of this area through either an isolated neck lift, or in conjunction with a facelift.

About the procedure

Like a face lift, a neck lift can improve signs of aging. This procedure is performed in the operating room with the patient asleep. The procedure can address any one or more of these concerns:
· Sagging neck skin and tissue that causes the appearance of a “double chin”
· Drooping fat that creates jowls or deposits under the chin
· Muscle banding in the neck (i.e. platysmal bands), which created abnormal contours

Though small incisions that are concealed under the chin and occasionally within the natural curves of your ear, the underlying muscles and tissues are tightened to allow for a more crisp jawline and slender neck contour. In addition, if indicated, excess fat and skin can be removed, providing a smoother overall appearance.

Neck lifts can be performed individually,,but are oftentimes performed along with other facial plastic surgery procedures to achieve a harmonious result throughout the face and neck. These include a face lift, brow lift, or eyelid surgery.

Recovery

After the procedure, you will have light dressings over your incisions. Small, flexible tubes (i.e. drains) may be present to drain any excess blood or fluid, and minimize swelling. Recovery time is about minimizing swelling and bruising, this is different for each patient, but usually patients feel comfortable attending social events with light make-up two weeks after surgery. To minimize swelling, you will need to keep your head elevated above your heart and avoid twisting or bending of your neck.

As part of the recovery process, you will receive:
· Instructions that may include how to care for the surgical site and drains
· Medications to apply or take
· Areas to watch with your doctor at the surgical site or in your general health
