Diet and exercise are important for a healthy lifestyle. And even with diet and exercise, excess fat can be problematic. This may be especially true as we age, have had pregnancies or faced other factors.

Liposuction is a good option for removing excess fat and reshaping the body. Liposuction is possible on many parts of the body including the abdomen, hips, back, thighs and arms. Liposuction can be performed as an isolated procedure, and also used in combination with other procedures (e.g. tummy tuck, thigh lift, arm lift, breast reduction).

Liposuction is not considered a treatment for obesity. Instead, it should be tool in achieving your ideal body size/shape. Additionally, to achieve long-term satisfaction and happiness, liposuction should be supplemented with an overall healthy lifestyle, including a well-balanced diet and regular exercise.

About the procedure

Liposuction is performed in the operating room with the patient asleep. Using small, blunt cannulas and suction, fat is removed through small subcentimeter incisions, usually hidden below the underwear line and within the bra line. The duration of the procedure varies on the amount of fat present and how many areas are being treated.

Recovery

Patients typically go home the same day after liposuction, unless performed in large volumes, or if performed in conjunction with other procedures. After the procedure, you will need to wear a compression garment for up to 6 weeks to help minimize swelling and achieve an ideal contour.

Aside from strenuous activity or heavy lifting, patients typically resume their normal activities shortly after surgery. A majority of the swelling and bruising is improved by the 2-week mark. However, some residual swelling can last up to 3 months.
